LPNs however are under the supervision of RNs or NPs. Knowledge, skill and expertise are secondary to what really defines the core competence of a nurse, but foremost, is their virtue and traits which define their attitude towards their patients - caring, compassionate, nurturing and dedication. LPNs or LVNs assist physicians and RNs care for patients, which means, they work under their directions. LPNs have the technical knowledge to perform routine nursing duties, however, they also make appointments, maintain patient records and perform basic clerical duties. Most LPNs work in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare institutions and private homes. LPNs likewise have a crucial role in patient care. They check patients vital signs, in some cases they may give their patients drugs that doctors have prescribed. Duties of an LPN includes:
